Justification of the research
Every industry or any part of the society can be influenced by crisis. Crisis can be economical, social, demographical, organisational, psychological etc and existence of one type of crisis can lead to another.
Due to the ongoing credit crises, which spread globally due to the common project called “globalisation” and influenced almost every industry, companies, especially multinational ones, suffer losses and damages. Therefore, they are forced to cut down number of working places, costs, restructure organisations and even change strategies in order to sustain profitable and competitive.
Norilsk Nickel is the world's leading producer of nickel and palladium and one of the largest producers of cobalt and platinum. It also produces a variety of by-products, such as cobalt, rhodium, silver, gold, iridium, ruthenium, selenium, tellurium and sulphur. Its subdivisions are based on four continents in six countries: Russia, Australia, Finland, Botswana, USA and South Africa. Norilsk Nickel main competitors are Anglo American plc, Lonmin plc, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce and Xtrata plc (Norilsk Nickel online).
What is more, Norilsk Nickel is the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium and one of the leading producers of copper as well as platinum. The share of the Russian GDP made by Norilsk Nickel is around 2% and 2.8% in the industrial output of the Russian Federation (Russia Profile online). Norilsk Nickel world’s nickel production share is over 18% and about 2.5% of the copper production. What is more, it produces around 50% of world’s palladium and 13% of platinum. Furthermore, the importance of these metals is obvious: nickel is widely used in making rechargeable batteries and in chemical industry. Palladium is an extraordinary metal which is used, for instance, in production of medical equipment. Therefore, it is essential to analyse how vulnerable this industry is to crisis due to its contribution to the economy and almost all the areas.
